Ikona Ryokan, near Shimoda, Izu, Japan
09/04/08 18:08
This is a traditional Japanese ryokan, complete with indoor and outdoor onsen (spa), both public and private. The service and food are impeccible. The manager (okami in Japanese) speaks excellent English and will go out of her way to make your stay enjoyable. You will stay in a traditional Japanese style room - tatami mats, futons - and have the option of being served your breakfast and dinner in the room, by your very own waitress (dressed in kimono). It's not cheap, and there is not a great deal to do other than enjoy the onsen and the food! So for one or two nights of real Japanese hospitality, it's a must.

The Shinagawa Prince Hotel is part of a huge complex, located very conveniently and reasonably priced. It is right opposite Shinagawa station, which serves all lines, as well as the Shinkansen. If you're lucky, you'll get a view of Fuji from your window. Rooms aren't huge, but very clean and well equipped. There's free internet (not wireless), and within the complex is a cinema, bowling alley and internet cafe.
